I Tried a Plastic Free Dermaplaner and This is What I Thought

This is a sponsored post by Leaf Shave. All thoughts and opinions are my own

I’ve been wanting to get into dermaplaning for months now, but I was timid to start. Not only did it feel intimidating, but I felt bad that the only dermaplaners I knew of were disposable and plastic. Since I try to live a more sustainable lifestyle, I was SO excited when I saw that Leaf Shave created the all-metal, zero-waste dermaplaning facial razor.

If you don’t already know, a dermaplaner removes the fine hair and dead skin cells from your face leaving it SO buttery smooth. It also increases the permeability of your skincare so it can do its job even better. The issue is, most dermaplaners on the market right now are plastic, one-time-use tools that majorly cut into your budget. In fact, more than 300 million plastic dermaplaner parts are thrown away yearly! It’s frustrating to have to pick between taking care of your skin and taking care of the planet. As a girlie with acne prone skin, it’s a decision I don’t want to have to make.

What makes Leaf Shave different?

Finally a plastic free option has arrived so I can keep my skin clean without dirtying the planet. The tool is all metal with refillable blades, much like a safety razor, and looks really sleek sitting on my counter. It was so simple to put together right out of the packaging and it truly felt accessible to try for the first time.

So after using it for over a month, here’s what I love about this dermaplaner:

1. It’s Not Intimidating to Use

Thirty minutes after I’d received the package my face was peach fuzz free and baby soft with only the tiniest learning curve. The only thing I did was hold the dermaplaner at a 45 degree angle and it was smooth sailing from there. This video explains how to use it well!

I started by washing my face and putting on a few drops of the Leaf Shave Oil. It left my skin feeling so hydrated and allowed the blade to glide safely against my skin. I gently pulled my skin taut and moved the tool down my face at an angle, heading towards the middle of my face. I was honestly surprised how quickly I got the hang of it! After I was done, I rinsed, put on a little more oil, and made everyone in the vicinity feel how silky my skin was.

2. The Facial Oil is Vegan!

I was worried I might accidentally cut myself with the blade, considering I’d never dermaplaned before, but not one nick! This is probably also thanks to their Shave Oil- with which I am now obsessed. It works so well for dermaplaning, but also to keep the moisture locked in afterward. It’s completely vegan with the main ingredient being jojoba oil- the closest thing to your skin’s natural oils. I’ve used oils in the past that feature other things like coconut oil in the mix and my skin always breaks out after. Leaf’s oil is non-comedogenic so it doesn’t clog your pores. Just as good as the inside, though, is the outside- the bottle. It’s made of glass with a plastic-free dropper attached to a 100% wood cap. Even better, when you’re done, keep your dropper and your next bottle will come with a metal cap for you to recycle and replace with the dropper you already have!

I’m not going to lie... after looking at the ingredients, I even used some of the oil on my hair before the shower and I swear it worked wonders.

3. It’s Plastic Free

Not only is the product plastic free, but they make sure the packaging is too. Leaf Shave is a carbon-neutral company, offsetting 100% of their C02 emissions starting from the raw materials all the way to the mail on your doorstep.

AND once you’ve used the blade up, you can recycle it!

You can send the blades back to Leaf Shave if you don’t have scrap metal recycling near you, which is incredible since I’ve never seen metal recycling in Arkansas.

Your next refill will then arrive in recyclable packaging for less than $1 for each blade. What I think is so awesome is that you‘ll have this dermaplaner for your entire life. It’s designed to only be bought once! When that last day finally does come, though, feel good knowing you can recycle it, too.

I am so excited that I finally got to dip my toes in the face shaving world, and to use a dermaplaner made with the planet in mind. If you’ve been thinking about dermaplaning, but don’t know where to start, Leaf Shave’s Dermaplaner Kit has literally everything you could need to get started, minus the waste. Let me tell you, my skin is feeling quite luxurious these days.
